David Handley
Vegetable and Small Fruit Specialist; Extension Professor
Dr. David Handley joined the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in 1983. David’s work location is unique in that he was assigned to work from the research farm in Monmouth. Highmoor Farm is a picturesque location and the center of the University’s research and outreach in small fruits, tree fruits, and vegetables. David established himself as a valuable resource to the small fruit and vegetable growers across Maine and New England. He has conducted important research into plant varieties that will do well in Maine’s climate and be preferred by consumers. The outcome of David’s research has been shared through Cooperative Extension and used by commercial growers in Maine for 25 years and has generated millions of dollars for the industry.
An important aspect of David’s work is the strawberry and sweet corn integrated pest management program. These two high value crops represent a significant portion of the revenue generated by the small fruit and vegetable industry. David has been working to provide growers with timely, accurate, and science based information that results in better decisions by growers in how to use pesticides with their crops. The result is better quality strawberries and sweet corn that we all enjoy and the savings of many thousands of dollars to growers.
David is an exceptional resource to county-based faculty throughout Extension. David provides educational support to improve the knowledge and skills of his colleagues. He is a significant part of the Master Gardener training program statewide. Additionally, David is known throughout New England and is frequently asked to present at regional conferences.
Cooperative Extension is very grateful for the 25 years of dedicated service Dr. David Handley has given to the University of Maine and the farmers who admire and appreciate his work. Thank you, David.
