Julie R. Jones
Administrative Assistant I
Department of Sociology
Julie Jones has been the Administrative Assistant for the Department of Sociology since 1999, which she joined after having served in other units on campus. Sociology faculty and students greatly appreciate her cheerfulness and kindness in all that she does. Julie is very student-oriented and always gives students a warm welcome when they visit the department office before helping them with their inquiries.
Julie also has an important community role beyond her work in the Sociology Department as an essential member of V K9 Scent Specific Search and Recovery Unit. Julie has been active in Canine Search and Rescue for over 14 years.
She and her dog Quincy, search throughout Maine and across the country for missing people or suspected criminals. They find the missing or help bring the criminal to justice, but the hardest to bear is when the individual is located deceased. All these outcomes, happy or not, are the culmination of Julie’s passion for her craft as is evident in her excellence in performing it.
In her free time, Julie gives talks and demonstrations of canine search and rescue to schools and emergency personnel. She loves to educate everyone with the innovative “Hug-A-Tree” Program, which teaches children and adults what to do in the event they find themselves lost in the woods.
A caring and compassionate woman, who gives her time and expertise freely, Julie is an exemplary standard to follow and a visible practitioner of the volunteer public service component of the University of Maine’s flagship mission to blaze the trail and forge the path so that others may follow. Julie, for your long University service, work, drive, and desire to help on behalf of the University of Maine, our students, and the people of Maine, we thank you.
