James W. Warhola
Professor of Political Science

James Warhola is now the senior statesman of the Department of Political Science. The range and depth of his study in comparative politics is truly extraordinary.  Jim has also pursued his interest in, and now teaches, medieval political thought. In Jim Warhola we see a true renaissance scholar!

Jim’s international reputation as a scholar is well established. To take a few recent and significant examples, Jim was invited to participate in and deliver a paper at the Oxford (England) Round Table in July 2007, the theme of which was ”Church and State in Contemporary World.” Jim presented "Coexistence or Confrontation? The Politics of Interaction Between Orthodoxy and Islam in Contemporary Russia", at a conference in Moscow, Russia, in May 2006. A revised version of his paper, "Coexistence or Confrontation? The Politics of Interaction between Orthodoxy and Islam in Contemporary Russia: Culture, Institutions, and Leadership," was presented at the Institute for Human Sciences, in Vienna, Austria in March 2007. Finally, Jim was asked to moderate the 2007 Camden Conference (Camden, Maine), whose theme was Europe: Old Continent in a New World. This role is crucial to the success of an internationally recognized conference, and by all accounts Jim was certainly equal to the challenge!

Jim is a widely published scholar, and an equally devoted teacher. In 2002 Jim was named Distinguished Maine Professor by the University of Maine Alumni Association, a worthy honor indeed. Jim is a model colleague, and we salute him for 25 years of service to the University of Maine and look forward to many more!
