Elaine M. Albright
Fogler Library
Elaine Albright served the University of Maine, her alma mater, for 24 years as Director of Libraries, Professor, Dean of Cultural Affairs and Libraries, and Fogler Fellow for Library Development. As Dean she was responsible for the Hudson Museum and Maine Center of the Arts as well. She also served as Interim Director of the Hudson Museum for three years and Interim Director, Instructional Technology Division for six years.
Elaine was instrumental in bringing technology to Fogler and other libraries throughout the state. She was the leader in developing and acquiring the technology to create URSUS, the online state-wide catalog which brings together the holdings of all UMaine System Libraries, Bangor Public Library, the Maine State Library, Maine State Archives, and the Maine State Law and Legislative Reference Library. Through her leadership Fogler became the largest library in the State, and was named the Science, Technology and Business Research Library for the State of Maine.
She was involved in and chaired committees for numerous state-wide, regional, and national library associations. She also gave many presentations – most often with topics on the use of information technology in libraries.
Elaine was honored by the Maine Library Association as the 2001 Outstanding Librarian of the Year.
Elaine was a caring and forward thinking leader who sought to not only improve Fogler Library so that current students, faculty, staff, and public patrons would have a better place for research and learning, but to also insure that Fogler Library will be a valuable resource for future generations.
Her dedication and service to Fogler Library, University of Maine, and libraries throughout the state is appreciated by all who worked with her in seeking excellence in our libraries.
