James D. McCleave
Professor of Marine Sciences
Cooperating Professor of Biological Sciences
Jim McCleave exemplifies the bedrock on which good academic institutions are built. He is a consummate scholar, accomplished teacher, esteemed mentor, and a wise and skilled administrator. We at the University of Maine have benefited from his contributions for 40 years and we are a far better institution as a result.
Professor McCleave is recognized internationally as a first-rate fisheries oceanographer. While building his impressive professional résumé of publications, service, and teaching, he has defied conventional wisdom and remains an exceptionally nice person. Jim is as steady and unflappable as anyone could hope for in a colleague and particularly as an administrator. He has always provided thoughtful and well-reasoned contributions to any discussion (ranging from oceanographic processes to English grammar), even the often-contentious ones surrounding issues faced by an academic unit.
He is the epitome of a “good citizen” within the University and has answered the call to lead three different academic units on campus—Zoology, Oceanography (twice), and Marine Sciences—something one might suspect is an institutional record. As Associate Director of the School of Marine Sciences shortly after its inception, he charted the course for the School’s undergraduate programs toward the success they enjoy today. He has most recently provided thoughtful guidance of the research activities for the Maine Sea Grant College.
Although his new role as Emeritus Professor will mark the end of his official academic duties, anyone who knows Jim also knows that he will remain a resource to our programs for both his scientific expertise and sage advice. We will continue to enjoy his insights, sense of humor and camaraderie, not to mention his fine cooking. Jim, congratulations and best wishes on your retirement.
