Jim Philp

Cooperating Associate Professor in Forest Resources

Jim Philp has worked for over 25 years as a Forestry & Wood Products Specialist at University of Maine Cooperative Extension.

Throughout his career in Extension Jim has provided high quality programming in wood scaling education achieving positive results for state and international audiences. His design and delivery of educational programs focusing on secondary wood products entrepreneurs has allowed them to build upon their existing knowledge and skills through individual and group consultations.

Jim’s education and training of future and current sawmill harvesters through hands-on workshops and demonstrations on campus and across the state has been well received. His collegial support in the emerging School of Forestry and in working with youth using GIS/GPS technology has earned him a positive reputation among high school and university students.

Jim’s engaging teaching style has included engaging workshop presentations, newsletter and trade journal articles, and individual and group consultations tailored to the audiences he reached. His use of the web to educate and inform has resulted in a web site that is used by thousands of individuals across the globe.

Jim has represented University of Maine Extension at Campus Forestry Education symposia and at the summer forestry and Yankee Woodlot camps with great enthusiasm.  His knowledge of the woods and sawmill technology will be missed as he moves into this next phase of his life.
