Suzanne Tyler
Associate Professor of Education
Education
Suzanne Tyler earned her doctorate in Physical Education/ Sports Psychology from the University of Maryland. A legendary coach who led University of Maryland teams to national championships in two different sports, Sue came to UMaine when the university’s athletic department was undergoing a difficult transition to new ways of thinking and operating – in the aftermath of a painful NCAA investigation. She led the department through that period with grace and optimism, and left the UMaine athletic program on solid footing in every regard.
She then joined the faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education in the College of Education and Human Development. She brought to the College her expertise in physical education, sports psychology and sports management. She also brought her concern for student learning, rigorous coursework and a willingness to work with faculty, staff and students for the purposes of meeting student and program needs.
Professor Tyler regularly taught a sports psychology class, the College’s orientation course for students in Kinesiology and Physical Education programs and supervised physical education student teachers. Sue’s students valued her as a very knowledgeable, prepared, open, enthusiastic and respectful teacher who made each class important to attend. This year she took the lead in developing and implementing a comprehensive and relevant alternative capstone experience for teacher education candidates who have chosen not to student teach.
Throughout her time at the University of Maine, Sue has made valuable contributions to the university’s educational and athletic programs. She is the epitome of a professional educator. Thank you, Sue, on behalf of the College and the University and best wishes in your retirement.
