David Wihry
Associate Professor of Economics

Professor David Wihry came to the University of Maine in 1969 from the Maxwell Fellow from Syracuse University.  Dave is admired for his consistent championing of his field and his colleagues.  He is known and valued for his excellent teaching, research record and his many public service activities.  In 1989 Dave received the Presidential Public Service Achievement Award.

Dave’s work is data driven and characterized by the highest integrity.  He can always be counted on for a thoughtful and honest analysis of departmental or college issues.  An example of his tireless dedication to Economics is his record of three separate terms as department chair!  His colleagues have expressed high regards for his leadership style of consensus building and camaraderie.  As chair, he consistently prioritized a responsible approach toward resources and setting high expectations for faculty performance.

Through the recent organizational transitions, Dave has done a tremendous job leading Economics through turbulent times.    Dave is also committed to our students receiving the highest quality education possible.  He has strived to create a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for students taking Economics courses—so important to the success of our students.

Dave, thank you for your 39 years of dedication and commitment to the University of Maine.  We wish you a fulfilling retirement.
