Robert Boyington
Electrician and Elevator Contract Coordinator
Facilities Management
Bob Boyington started his career at the University of Maine over 42 years ago. He was hired as a Truck Driver for the Electrical Shop, driving their van to job sites, delivering workers, materials and tools. About a year later, Bob entered the Electrician Apprentice program, which he completed in 1972.
The following year Bob became a Motor Maintenance Mechanic I under Joe Hampel. While working for Joe, Bob developed his maintenance and electrical trouble-shooting skills and was promoted to a Motor Maintenance Mechanic II in 1980. Even though motor maintenance work is not generally clean work, Bob was always willing to do what was required, no matter how dirty it was. His can do attitude was greatly appreciated when it came to difficult jobs.
Bob especially loves to talk about the time a co-worker and he were replacing a roof top fan motor. When Bob shouted up for the co-worker to throw down the rope they would use to pull the new unit up, the full coil landed at his feet.
After completing elevator maintenance training in the late ‘90’s Bob was assigned oversight of the elevator contractor work on campus. In 2002, he became the University’s first Elevator Contract Coordinator.
Throughout his career, Bob has been active on employee councils and involved in various aspects of campus life. His contribution was recognized in 2007 when he received the Outstanding Classified Employee Award.
For more than 42 years, Bob, you have served Facilities Management and the University and we thank you for your commitment and dedication.
Bob, we wish you an enjoyable and fulfilling retirement.
