Dr. Stephen Butterfield
Professor of Education and Special Education
College of Education & Human Development

From day one, Dr. Stephen Butterfield has been the consummate Kinesiology and Physical Education faculty member in the College of Education and Human Development.  His colleagues have noted that, by any standard, he is a productive scholar, a teacher who is highly committed to quality instruction, an excellent advisor, and a person who has consistently served at the university, state and the national level.  His students identify him as an extraordinary and inspiring teacher.  In the words of one student, “Dr Butterfield is an excellent instructor who is worthy of the deep respect from all who are fortunate to have him.  He is fair, consistent, and very articulate.”

Over the years during his Adaptive Physical Education class, he has conducted a ten-week program entitled The Developmental Motor and Aquatics Laboratory that provides an opportunity for children and adults with disabilities from several schools and agencies in the community to receive one-on-one instruction from university students in a variety of sports, fitness, recreation, and aquatic activities.  This instruction has transformed many University students and opened their minds about individuals with disabilities.  They are richer in knowledge and personal character after this course.

Dr. Butterfield has served on a number of state and national committees and boards such as the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and the Board of Director’s of the National Consortium on Physical Education and Recreation for Individuals with Disabilities.  He served as the campus’s Project Director for the NCAA’s National Youth Sports Program,  and more than once it was recognized as one of the best programs in the United States.

As former Dean Robert Cobb reflected, “Steve is the stalwart of the KPE program and one of the strongest individuals in the College.”  He also noted that the only flaw in an otherwise exceptional career is Steve’s life long passion for the Yankees in Red Sox Nation!  In spite of that, Steve Butterfield is a highly respected colleague within the College of Education & Human Development.
Steve, thank you for your twenty-five years of commitment to the students, the College, and the University!
