Jean Day
Administrative Assistant II
Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture

Jean Day has been with the Lobster Institute since we began in 1987. Prior to that she was an important part of the Sea Grant program which lead to the creation of the Lobster Institute.

Jean is well known, respected and loved by the lobstering community in the United States and Canada. She could easily talk to anyone and sorted out many problems. She organized finances, publications, travel and many other issues related to the Lobster Institute. She managed the budget to the penny with an iron hand. Because of Jean the Institute has survived these 22 years as the major force for the “lobster republic.” We still rely on her memory of who did what and when. She knew how to have fun at the Fishermen's forum, Massachusetts Lobstermen's Annual meeting, U.S Canada Town meeting and other trips across the border to the Maritimes. We know she remembers the van trip to Prince Edward Island and its adventures and we recall a preference for chardonnay. It was Jean's secret recipe that was used for the Lobster Institute lobster roll and lobster stew fund raisers at home coming week end. The profits were in the thousands of dollars!

Jean still maintains her position as a coordinator for the Maine Fishermen's Forum and is the unofficial greeter for all who attend. Jean was the core of our C.O.R.E. fund raising campaign and helped us reach our goals. As secretary/clerk of our board of advisors, she kept the board in line.

Jean was an integral part of the development and success of the Lobster Institute. Everyone who has worked with her knows that the Institute would not be what it is today without her. The staff at the Institute has memorized Jean’s phone number, and promise to call on her for her expertise. Jean, your 30 years of service to the Lobster Institute and the University of Maine has left a tremendous legacy. Thank you and best wishes in your retirement.
