Dr. Eugene Del Vecchio
Professor of Spanish
Modern Languages & Classics

Dr. Eugene Del Vecchio came to the University of Maine as a classicist. His research areas include the Renaissance, Cervantes, modern Spanish and comparative literature.

A faculty member who was introduced by Gene related discussion of just what was meant by "picaresque". From that a lively and interesting exchange, it was clear that Gene thoroughly immersed in and knowledgeable about the complexities of European literature and culture.

He has served as department chair and as associate dean of the Graduate School. His scholarly publications include a 1993 volume he edited on the poetry of Spanish writer Rosalia de Castro. Gene has also served the Faculty Senate, the Undergraduate Program and Curriculum Committee, and the College Academic Committee. He also served as chair of Spanish Neoclassicism and Romanticism for the Northeast Modern Language Association. He is a member of the Modern Language Association, Philological Association of the Pacific Coast, Associación Internacional de Hispanistas, American Comparative Literature Association, International Comparative Literature Association, American Council on Teachers of Foreign Languages, and Foreign Language Association of Maine.

Gene has shown himself to be a friend capable of steering a steady course through the shoals and hidden rocks of academe; one who meets adversity and challenge with humor and perspective. Gene is a valued stalwart of the Honors Program and a steady colleague in the department.

Congratulations, Gene, on your 25 years of distinguished contributions to UMaine!
