Department of Computer Science

Gerry Dube has been at the University of Maine in various capacities for almost five decades. He came as an undergraduate student and received his B.A. in Mathematics in 1963. He stayed for graduate work and received his M.A. in Mathematics in 1964. He then joined CAPS (Computing and Administrative Processing Services), which would become UNET (University of Maine System Network), which is now ITS (Information Technology Services) as well as becoming a faculty member in Mathematics.

He rose to be an Associate Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science Departments and the Director of UNET. He was the first Chair of the Computer Science Department when it was created in 1981. Gerry has been and continues to be a tremendous voice for improving the computing infrastructure in Maine. Gerry pioneered bringing internet connectivity to the schools and was the guiding light behind the public school network. Maine was one of the first, if not the first, state to connect all of its public schools to the internet.

Gerry also took the lead in building up the state government network and all sorts of other networks in Maine. He was the Principal Investigator on the National Science Foundation grant that brought Internet 2 to Maine. He has worked on countless projects with students and others and has been a tremendous inspiration to everyone connected with computing technology in the state of Maine.

Congratulations, Gerry, on your 44 years of wonderful work with and contributions to the University of Maine. Best wishes in your retirement!
