Dr. Michael S. Greenwood
Ruth Hutchins Professor of Tree Physiology
Cooperating Professor of Biosciences
Assistant Director for Forest Resources Research
School of Forest Resources

Dr. Mike Greenwood is retiring after 25 years of excellent service to the University of Maine and the state’s forest resource community. As a University of Maine faculty member, Mike held the Ruth Hutchins Professor of Tree Physiology and Forestry endowed chair where he worked to improve the genetics of planted seedlings and advance our understanding about the physiology of forest trees as it relates to reforestation success. He taught a challenging graduate class on tree physiology that was highly rated by forest resources graduate students over the years.

During his time on the faculty, Dr. Greenwood provided leadership in forest resources in various ways, including serving as Assistant Director for Forest Resources Research for the Maine Agricultural & Forest Experiment Station and College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture from 1998-2006. He also was Chair of the Department of Forest Biology from 1986-1992. His work and expertise were honored by the US Secretary of Agriculture by being asked to serve on the National Genetic Resources Advisory Council from 1993-1995, and by receiving the University of Maine Pierce-Webber Award for Outstanding research in Forest Resources in 1996. He also gave back to his field by serving on the editorial boards of the Canadian Journal of Forest Research, New Zealand Journal of Forestry Science, Journal of Sustainable Forestry, and Tree Physiology.

Mike is passionate about forestry practices and has been involved in a number of the public debates about forestry in Maine. We will miss Dr. Greenwood’s constant encouragement and challenge for faculty and graduate students to do more rigorous forest science. Mike is an avid golfer and will spend much more time in the coming years in pursuit off his other passion.

Mike, please accept our gratitude for your service and contributions to the University of Maine over the past 25 years!
