George Smith
Garage Supervisor
Facilities Management

George Smith came to the University as a Special Equipment Operator over 12 years ago after operating his own business for many years. He could be counted on to be here in all kinds of weather and at any time of the day or night.

In 1998 George was promoted to Assistant Grounds Supervisor. His heavy equipment knowledge was crucial in the purchase of new shop equipment and he was regularly called upon for his expertise.

In 2001 George was promoted to Grounds Supervisor II. The following year he assumed additional responsibilities overseeing the Garage operation. His exemplary work ethic coupled with his eagerness to learn earned him a promotion as the Garage Supervisor.

Throughout his time here George has demonstrated a willingness to do what was asked of him no matter what the challenge entailed. On one occasion he was called to a break-in at Shibles Hall. The culprit was a disoriented deer who had crashed through a basement window. George and a fellow worker worked quickly to get the panicked deer out safely. Although George received a few blows from the deer, this was just another day at work.

George is especially fond of his family and enjoys hunting and other outdoor activities.

Thank you, George and congratulations on your well-earned retirement from the University of Maine.
