James Campbell
Assistant Carpenter Supervisor
Facilities Management
After graduating from Eastern Maine Vocational Technical Institute in 1976, Jim worked for several contractors before coming to the University of Maine in 1982. One week shy of his six-month probationary period, he was laid off. Three weeks later, he was re-hired as a Mason Tender/Carpenter.
In 1993 Jim became Crew Leader for the Minor Maintenance unit. He continued to receive positive evaluations, especially for his effective coordination and attentiveness to customer needs. In 1999, as a result of his commendable work, Jim was promoted to Assistant Carpenter Supervisor.
Jim is a dedicated worker who makes sure his crew has the information and materials necessary to perform their jobs in a timely manner. While his work involves many repair and remodeling projects, over the years his skill at creating parts for out-dated furniture has proved invaluable.
Jim has been a mountain climber since he was 12 and started rock climbing 13 years ago with his sister, Jane. They’ve climbed in Maine, New Hampshire, New York and Nevada. They’ve also climbed Mt. Katahdin more than 25 times with his son, Justin. After seeing pictures, some people think Jim is crazy to rock climb, but he is in his element in the natural environment.
Jim and his wife, Betty, who has worked the majority of her 27 years here in the University Bookstore, will celebrate 22 years of marriage this month. They spend many evenings attending school activities for their daughters, Hilary and Taylor.
We thank you, Jim, for your continued commitment and for the excellent work you do every day. Thank you for your 25 years of service!
