Carolyn Joyce Kleffner retired as an Extension Professor and Educator with University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Hancock County after 28 years of service. She conducted educational programs in parenting, health, early care and education, food security, and small business education. She served on numerous advisory committees and boards where she encouraged the leadership skills of others. Joyce’s work demonstrated her commitment to reaching new audiences by adapting to the changing needs of the public. In the early 90’s she was a leader within Extension by addressing topics such as water quality and solid waste management. Later in the 90’s she embraced small business education to add to the economic vitality of the down east region. Joyce was a tireless advocate for the Maine Extension Homemakers groups where she mentored county leaders to aspire towards state officer roles.

Joyce excelled in her support for child care providers. She helped coordinate conferences and meaningful ongoing education to these business owners who provide an essential service to society. A highlight of this work was the writing of a curriculum Developing a Family Child Care Business in 2006 for the University of Southern Maine Muskie School of Public Service.

Joyce also developed curriculum and provided supervision, support and training for Cooperative Extension's Eat Well Nutrition Program Associates who work with food stamp program recipients and limited income families. She wrote and co-authored Food For ME series to address food insecurity through community education and outreach efforts. Her creative and inspiring teaching and demonstrations helped public school teachers, agency staff and community people understand apply USDA dietary guidelines, food safety, and food label recommendations to more confidently and enjoyably meet their health and dietary needs.

Joyce is a wonderful member of the Extension family and she will be missed for years to come. Joyce, for your many years of dedication to the citizens of the State of Maine through Cooperative Extension we thank you. Best wishes on your retirement.
