Leslie Shaw
Assistant Director of Information Technologies
Information Technologies
Les has always been a busy person who has worn many hats. Les has done the major planning for telecommunications at the University of Maine for many years. It is his planning and effort that resulted in the upgrade to the new voice mail system at the University. He has contributed significantly in planning on how the campus will move to the next generation of telephones that run over fiber optic cables instead of copper wires.
Les is responsible for helping each area in Information Technologies live within their budgets. It is a result of Les’ efforts that enables IT to arrive with a balanced budget at the end of each fiscal year. Budget managers didn’t always like to get their monthly budget sheets from Les, but he always helped them live within their budget.
Les has coordinated many of the developments in video conferencing at the University of Maine as well. He installed and operated the first bridge to allow multiple sites to join in a conference, and a device that allows instance streaming of a video conference on the Internet for remote viewers who can’t be in a video conferencing room. He is currently testing the first high definition video conference system at the University of Maine.
Les is just an all around nice guy. He runs the grill at departmental picnics and he treats the staff to ice cream when there are ice cream socials on the mall. He is always fair in his decisions, which has earned him the respect of the Information Technologies staff.
Les has always given careful thought to the operation of IT and its effect on the University of Maine. His counsel and advice are always welcomed, and always on the mark.
Congratulations to Less on his retirement. The University of Maine is a better place thanks to all Les has contributed in IT over the last 26 years. We wish him the best. He will be missed.
