Dr. George Markowsky has had a remarkable career. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Harvard in 1973 and spent 10 years as a research scientist with IBM before coming to Maine. In his 25 years at UMaine, George has been a productive scholar with over 70 published papers, numerous conference presentations, and a half-dozen books to his credit. George is a natural leader. He was hired as the first Chair of the Department of Computer Science and is currently serving his fourth term as Chair. From 2001-2003 he did double duty as the Chair of Computer Science as well as the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. George has also had some interesting international appointments. During the 2004-2005 academic year he was Dean of the American-Ukrainian Faculty at Ternopil National Economic University in Ukraine. In 2006-2007 he was Visiting Professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Lally School of Management and Technology.
George has an incredibly creative mind and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. He was the founding President of the Maine Software Developers Association. He formed a software company, Trefoil Corporation, and founded Ayers Island, LLC which is developing a research and development center on Ayers Island in Orono. For a while George did a weekly radio spot, “TechTalk” on WMTW in Portland and he has been an active member of Mindship International, a non-profit organization that creates opportunities for collaboration between artists and scientists.
It’s not clear that George ever sleeps. Currently, he is devoting a portion of his creative energies to creating the Center for Cyber-protected Intelligent Infrastructure with collaborators from Columbia University, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, and several corporations.
George, your accomplishments and contributions to the University of Maine during your 25 years are incredible. Thank you!
