Judith Mateja
Radiology Technician
Cutler Health Center
Judy Mateja has served the Cutler Health Center at the University of Maine for 42 years. As a Radiology Technician, Judy was responsible for the operation and delivery of the x-ray services for the campus community. At the time of her hire, Health Services was beginning a transition from second floor Crossland Hall to the new state of the art Cutler Health Center facility. Judy has witnessed the transformation of x-ray imaging from developing film in a dark room to full digital images captured in the electronic medium. Her skills have been instrumental in setting up, capturing and developing 40,000 to 50,000 x-ray images to support the medical needs of our students.
Over her career, Judy has been called upon numerous times by University research faculty to x-ray various materials such as ice and soil core samples. These particular x-ray setups were not found in any of her training manuals, but if it could fit on the table under the camera, Judy could find a way to take a quality x-ray.
Judy also served the Athletic Department in supporting their programs and athletes with on campus game day x-ray services. This included attending and being available at four decades of home football contests in the event of a serious injury. Many of the University of Maine coaches, athletic trainers, physicians, and athletes appreciate the numerous weekends that x-ray services were available to lessen their anxieties as well as to effectively manage the care of our student athletes.
This is just a few of the many contributions that Judy has made for the University of Maine over the past 42 years. We wish her all the best in her retirement and hope to see her on the sidelines of upcoming home football games. Congratulations on your retirement, Judy.
