Dr. Brian Perkins
Director of the Food Chemical Safety Laboratory
Food Science & Human Nutrition

Although he did not realize it at the time, Brian’s professional career at the University of Maine began in 1978 when he arrived at our campus as a wide-eyed first-year students working on a B.S. in Plant & Soil Sciences. He never imagined then that he would continue on to earn a doctorate and a research faculty appointment in the department of Food Science and Human Nutrition and spend more than 2 decades developing analytical methodologies for colleagues and collaborators from across campus and around the world. With a humble beginning in the Feed and Fertilizer lab in the basement of Holmes Hall, Brian was happy to join Food Science and move up - to the first floor of Holmes Hall!

His research interests have evolved and his responsibilities have increased since then, and he now serves as the Director of the Food Chemical Safety Laboratory in a cutting-edge analytical facility in Hitchner Hall. Brian’s history speaks to the quality of undergraduate and graduate education offered on our campus, but more importantly, it highlights the opportunities here for those who work hard and think big. His dedication to relevant research, public service and the development of quality Food Science programs have positively impacted his department, the University of Maine campus and the State of Maine. During his tenure ate the University of Maine he has mentored not only numerous award-winning high school students, but also has mentored, and assisted numerous college students, faculty, small Maine businesses and concerned citizens. Brian clearly understands our public service mission, as evidenced by his patient collaboration with all who seek his expertise.

Thank you, Brian, for 25 outstanding years of conscientious service!
