Dr. Charles Slavin
Dean of Honors College
Associate Professor
Honors College

Dr. Charlie Slavin administers a small but dedicated staff, coordinates full and part time activities of over one hundred faculty members, and is responsible for the Honors education of nearly eight hundred students. He has been the head of Honors at the University of Maine since 1997 when the Honors Program had 225 students.

Prior to moving to Honors, Charlie taught for thirteen years as a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics, teaching everything from first-year general education courses through graduate courses in analysis. During that time he developed 3C Calculus, a method of teaching calculus using small group collaborations and minimal lecturing, and co-developed with Bob Franzosa a course designed to engage students uninterested in mathematics, a course affectionately referred to as “The Bob and Charlie Show.”

However, Charlie’s strong interests in interdisciplinary education and undergraduate research lured him to the Honors Program which he oversaw through its transition in 2002 to an Honors College. At the same time, his vision for an Honors College was realized physically through the renovation of Colvin Hall, a transformation supported by gifts from individuals and classes and by a very supportive University administration.

Charlie will tell anyone that will listen that he has the “best job on campus” interacting daily with bright and motivated students, innovative faculty, and a tremendous Honors College team. And of course, everything is energized by being able to go home each evening to Nancy and Sam.

Thank you, Charlie, for your vision and energy in building the Honors College and for your 25 years of dedicated service to the University of Maine.
