Dr. Jim Toner is a highly valued colleague who fosters collaboration, innovation, and creativity. Jim clearly lives the Division of Lifelong Learning motto he coined, "Live for the Moment, Learn for a Lifetime." His progressive thinking and "can-do" attitude is infectious among his staff and across the University of Maine community.

With over 1,200 courses offered annually through CED, Summer University, and the Hutchinson Center, Jim's leadership has been critical. Assembling a staff that has garnered the admiration and respect of faculty is testimony to his commitment to quality in both technical support and faculty development initiatives.

Jim has been responsible for the extraordinary success of the Maine Studies Program, UMaine Travel Study Program, the University of Maine Academ-e, the Distance Education Faculty Grant Program and Forum; UMaine's Mechanical Engineering Program partnership with USM; the National Geodetic Survey GPS/GAP and Michigan Technological University projects; the Hutchinson Center; the award winning Art of Detection program; and, the PopTech!! course, just to name a few. Representing UMaine at professional meetings in South Africa and Russia, reflect the international focus he brings to his work.

Jim currently serves on the University's Undergraduate Program and Curriculum Committee; the DLL Curriculum Committee, the University of Maine System's Distance Education Learning Council, and teaches in the Peace and Reconciliation Studies Program. At UMaine Jim has also been Co-director of Teacher Corps, Associate Director of Conferences and Institutes, and President of PEAC.
