The Presidential Outstanding Teaching Award
In recognition of the importance to the University of Maine of outstanding teaching, the President of the University of Maine annually presents the Presidential Outstanding Teaching Award. The first award was given at the Spring 1991 Honors Convocation.
The Presidential Outstanding Teaching Award is presented annually to a tenured University of Maine faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding commitment to and ability in the teaching area. The recipient receives a medallion and monetary award.

Nomination Procedures
With the nomination form, please include:
- A letter of nomination written by a member of the UMaine community. The letter should explain the primary basis for the nomination and make clear the criteria by which the nominee’s teaching is judged by students and colleagues to be exceptional. (For example, the primary basis might be lecturing skills, mentoring skills, laboratory/project skills, pedagogical innovation, student learning results, development of learning materials, etc.)
- Objective evidence supporting the points made in the nomination. This might include summaries of student evaluations, samples of learning materials, record of other awards for teaching, quotations from reviews by peers and administrators, presentations, etc.
- Three to five letters of support from colleagues and student (which may include former students). One of the letters may be a composite prepared by the nominator, incorporating quotations from other letters solicited in support of this nomination and identifying the persons quoted. Such a composite letter is an option, not a requirement.
- A table summarizing the courses the nominee has taught each semester for the past five years. The nominee’s up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.
