Penobscot Snowshoes
19th Century

Three examples of this shoe type survive in Museum collections. Each has the same ornate, trefoil babiche work and double selvage cords in the center portion of the shoe. This pair is from the Abbe Museum's collections; another pair, collected by Frank Speck, is in the holdings of the American Museum of Natural History; and the third pair is among the collections of the Maine State Museum.
