Wabanaki Guide cover Wabanaki Guide to Maine

The Maine Indian Basketmakers Alliance invites you to follow the Wabanaki Trail in our publication A Wabanaki Guide to Maine. The guide offers an inside look at the region’s oldest art forms, still crafted by the Native men and women whose roots in this land stretch back more than 12,000 years.
Part One takes you to the home of the Penobscots in the islands of the Penobscot River. Part Two brings you to Bar Harbor for the annual Native American Festival. Part Three sends you downeast into Passamaquoddy country, with its blueberry barrens, salty sweetgrass shores, and vast fresh water lakes. Part Four invites you north to visit Micmac and Maliseet artists in the Aroostook River Valley. Part Five leads you into the North Woods, to the mountain known as Katahdin. Each of the five sections includes points of interest for each area plus a listing of other resources such as books, articles, film/videos, and audio that may be of interest to you.

The last section of the guide is the Cultural Resource Directory which includes the names and addresses of 100 Native artists, basketmakers and performers. Also included are addresses of museums, organizations, galleries and tribal governments and locations and dates of festivals and events where you can meet the artists, see demonstrations and listen to Wabanaki drumming and song.

• preserve and document the tradition of basketmaking among the four tribes
• expand markets for baskets in Maine and beyond
• ensure a supply of high-quality brown ash and sweetgrass for present and future generations
• provide outreach, education, and apprenticeships to younger members of the tribes to ensure continuation of the traditions.
