About UMaine

The University of Maine currently has approximately 11,000 students on a 660 acre campus.

Some Features of the Campus:

Memorial Gym and Field House

Field HouseThe Field House is used as a multipurpose facility for intramural sports. The Field House is about the size of a football field. Connected to it are racquetball and squash courts, and swimming pool. Use of Wallace Pool and the Field House is free for students.

Latti Fitness Center

Latti Fitness CenterThe Latti Fitness Center, located at the Memorial Gym, is open to students, faculty, and staff. Students can buy a membership for a reasonable semester fee.
 

Fogler Library

Fogler LibraryThe Fogler Library is the largest library in Maine. The building houses a Listening Center, Learning and Materials Center, and Special Collections (with manuscripts by Stephen King). More information about the library from Fogler's home page at: http://libraries.maine.edu/umaine/

Memorial Union

Memorial UnionThe Memorial Union is the campus center of student activities and recreational programs. The Union houses offices for Student Government and the Center for Students and Community Life, as well as numerous meeting rooms and lounges for study and relaxation. Other Union facilities include; Recreation Center, computer cluster, ATMs, ride board, Bookstore, Campus Information Center, Post Office, copy center, eateries and coffee shops, and an expansive food court. The Hole in the Wall gallery and Hauck Auditorium are inside the Union as well.

Computer Clusters

DPC Computer ClusterPublic Computer Clusters are perfect if you want to write a paper, do a group project, or check your email quickly. The Clusters are located in the Memorial Union and the Fogler Library and are accessible at all time the library and union are open. Both PCs and Macs are available as well as Microsoft office applications and a variety of graphics and web editing tools.

Bookstore

BookstoreThe UMaine bookstore offers students a place on campus to purchase their textbooks as well as UMaine merchandise, convenience items, and a wide variety of reading materials.
 

Planetarium

PlanetariumThe Maynard F. Jordan Planetarium sports a 20-foot solid dome suspended over 45 seats and a Spitz 373 projector that produces 1000 stars, clusters, planets, and the Milky way. The Jordan Planetarium productions include shows for young sky watchers and seasoned astronomy buffs, and special feature programs that explore a variety of related topics.

Maine Bound

Maine BoundMaine Bound is an outdoor adventure education program that takes learning out of the classroom and into the natural, elemental setting of rivers, mountains, and forests. The experienced Maine Bound Staff is available to teach and guide you in not only the technical aspects of the course you choose but also in developing skills you can use throughout your lifetime. Maine Bound offers programs and trips such as backpacking, canoeing, rock climbing, wilderness medicine, kayaking, cross country skiing, winter camping, ice climbing, international expeditions and ropes course programs. Maine Bound offers students a climbing wall on campus and an Outdoor Equipment Rental Program for camping, canoeing, kayaking, rock and ice climbing needs, and more.

Maine Center for the Arts

Maine Center for the ArtsThe Maine Center for the Arts, the cultural focus of the University and surrounding region, was dedicated in September 1986. The 1,629-seat Hutchins Concert Hall presents a wide assortment of live performances throughout the year, ranging from classical music to bluegrass, avant-garde dance to Broadway musicals, jazz to folk and ethnic music, comedy to family entertainment, and much more.

Page Farm and Home Museum

Page Farm and Home MuseumThe museum houses an ever-growing collection of farm implements and household items. The rest of the museum reflects the many varied aspects of farming and farm life. Equipment and vehicles having to do with everything from clearing land to harvesting and storing crops are displayed. Some of the many exhibits include Poultry, Dairy, 4-H and Ice Harvesting. There is a Blacksmith Shop complete with an original ox sling and an exhibit by the Orono Historical Society. The gift shop is located in an old General Store setting. A one-room schoolhouse moved from Holden, Maine and the Heritage Gardens are a part of the site as well.

Art Museum

Carnegie Hall Art MuseumCarnegie Hall houses the Art Department while the University of Maine Museum of Art which focuses on modern and contemporary, internationally and nationally known artists, is located at Norumbega Hall, 40 Harlow St., Bangor, Maine. Exhibits may be found in Carnegie Hall, and the Hauck, Graphics, and Hole in the Wall galleries in the Memorial Union. The Museum of Art hosts an annual calendar of exhibitions and programs featuring contemporary artists and ideas in a variety of traditional and non-traditional media, as well as exhibitions organized from the permanent collection of over 5,900 works of art. Included in the collection are works by artists such as Georges Braque, Mary Cassatt, Honore Daumier, Diego Rivera, and Pablo Picasso.

University Forest

University ForestThe Forest offers walking, jogging, biking, and skiing on miles of gravel roads and marked trails. A paved bike path extends from Old Town to the main campus. The forest has over three miles of frontage on the Stillwater River, providing canoeing, kayaking, fishing, and swimming opportunities.

Dormitories and Accommodations

DormitoryThere are 15 resident halls grouped largely into two residential communities, or South and East/West Campuses. All halls are coed except for Balentine Hall, which is an all-female residence hall. Males may request an all-male floor. In addition, York Village and Doris Twitchell Allen Village are apartment complexes available to students who have lived here for at least two years. DTAV is equipped with game room, updated telecommunications, and a meeting place for studying. Campus areas typically consist of a group of 3 residence halls, a dining common. Hall Governing Boards, and different lifestyle option, including a Chem-Free and quiet areas. The average Residence Hall room houses two students (though single rooms are available) and is furnished with a bed, bookshelf, dresser, closet, desk and a chair for each student. Also, every room is equipped with voice mail, cable and Internet access all of which is provided to the student for no extra cost.
