Welcome to Information Center

Two University of Maine servers have been compromised, potentially exposing personal information related to some 4,585 individuals who accessed UMaine Counseling Center services between Aug. 8, 2002 and June 21, 2010.

The UMaine police department is consulting with the U.S. Attorney’s office and computer crimes experts from the U.S. Secret Service on an aggressive investigation aimed at identifying and apprehending those responsible.

Potentially compromised information includes names and Social Security numbers, typical targets for criminals who seek to profit from stolen personal information. It is also possible that clinical information was exposed.

To assist those affected, UMaine has engaged the Debix Identity Protection Network. A national company that has assisted other universities in similar situations, Debix will provide affected students and former students with at least 12 months of identity protection at no cost. Those services include credit monitoring, alerts regarding credit changes and identity theft insurance.

Each person potentially affected will receive a letter with customized information about accessing these identity protection services at the university’s expense. Those letters will go in the mail at the beginning of July.

Clinical records have not been shared with anyone outside of the University of Maine Counseling Center.  Any questions pertaining to confidential information should be directed to the Counseling Center at (207) 581-1392.

Only those who accessed the Counseling Center between Aug. 8, 2002 and June 21, 2010 have cause for concern. Further information and details about taking advantage of Debix services are available here.
