Direct Exchange Programs

The University of Maine has formal agreements with the following institutions. Under most direct exchange programs, students pay their normal tuition and fees to the University of Maine and pay room and board to the host institution.  Students are charged a flat rate of 15 credits per semester plus academic fees and the $100 study abroad fee.  Students studying at the American University in Bulgaria pay their tuition, fees, room and board at the University of Maine. Be sure to meet with a Study Abroad Peer Advisor and/or Study Abroad Advisor for availability and specific requirements.

Recommended Programs

Students who participate in one of the recommended non-exchange study abroad programs pay all costs directly to the study abroad program. The University of Maine charges a $100 study abroad fee billed to the student’s account. Students who participate in an approved non-exchange program earn transfer credit at the University of Maine, and in most cases they may use their financial aid for study abroad.

In addition to the programs listed in this section, students may opt instead to enroll directly as a visiting-non-degree student at a university abroad, provided that the overseas university accepts such students and will issue an academic transcript at the completion of the student’s program of study. Any University of Maine student who is considering a study abroad program that is not on this list must meet with the Study Abroad Advisor prior to completing an application. Remember, the internet is not always a good resource for finding reputable programs!

SEAmester

SEAmester is the original 10-week college semester at sea. Fully accredited by the University of Maine, you can earn 12 university credits (6 credits in science and 6 credits in humanities) all while sailing over 3,000 nautical miles as part of the crew aboard a traditional wooden schooner. The courses are fully integrated into the voyage and focus on the diverse environments, both cultural and natural, we will visit along the way.

College students wishing to earn credit while living, studying, and working in a dynamic new environment may apply. Those outside the U. Maine system can transfer credits to their home institution, and students not currently enrolled or are in the midst of transferring may apply as well and earn credits toward their future academic record.

Check us out on line or follow the current SEAmester through our blog www.seamester.net . Feel free to call or email Alyson Graham with any questions regarding the SEAmester program.

Alyson Graham, Education Director, Ocean Classroom Foundation, 1-800-724-SAIL, agraham@oceanclassroom.org

  2. Once approved by SEAmester, contact UMaine marine sciences faculty William G. Ellis for UMaine approval and course information.
