Study Abroad Programs - Edith Cowan University

Edith Cowan University is located in Perth, Australia. The city of Perth is on the west coast of Australia. It is a vibrant, sophisticated city. As well as being a friendly, safe and relaxed city, Perth offers all the cosmopolitan attractions of a large international city. The city boasts hundreds of restaurants and cafes, cinemas, nightclubs, and music venues as well as great shopping! The warm sunny climate is also perfect for sporting and leisure activities – everything from tennis to golf through to whale watching and sailing.

General information:

The semester dates at Edith Cowan University (ECU)  are different than the semester dates at UMaine because Australia is located in the southern hemisphere.  Australian universities have summer vacation in December and January.

Semester 1 (UMaine’s spring semester)  - February to June

Semester 2 (UMaine’s fall semester)  - July to November

Academics:

ECU offers a large selection of units (courses) across many disciplines. Exchange students may choose units in any study area, as long as they meet any prerequisites for the unit. Read this information on how to choose courses and browse ECU’s course catalog called the Handbook. Most students take 3-4 courses at ECU

15 credit points at ECU = 4 credits at UMaine

As the two metropolitan campuses ( Joondalup and Mount Lawley) are located approximately 25 km apart (18 miles), it is preferable to choose units on one campus only. If you would like to enrol in units at both campuses, you should allow about 1.5 hours to travel between the two on public transportation (driving takes about 20 minutes). The South West regional campus at Bunbury, located approximately 180 km south of Perth (120 miles), offers a range of units if you would prefer to study in a smaller campus and town. You also have the option of studying some units online, however, you will need to be enrolled in at least one on-campus unit per semester.
