Study Abroad Programs - University of East Anglia

The University of East Anglia is located just outside the city of Norwich, only an hour from Cambridge and less than two hours from London.  There are a lot of places to see in historical Norwich, such as the Norman castle and cathedral and plenty of medieval buildings.  There are also oodles of fun dance clubs, restaurants, shopping centers, and theaters.  Norwich is also known for its tranquil side:  gardens, riverside paths, parks, cobbled streets, museums, and art galleries.  This city has a wonderful medieval/modern blend. Read more information about the city of Norwich here.

Academics:

Exchange students are required to enrol in a full load of credits. Full-time enrolment is 60 UEA credit units per semester (or 120 credits for an academic year), with most individual modules, or courses, valued at 20 credits, depending on the Faculty of Study. Generally, students enrol in 3 modules per semester. It is not possible to enrol in more than 60 credits in a single semester.

Read the Introduction to the Module Catalogue BEFORE selecting courses. For fields of study available to exchange students see What can I study at UEA.  Information on courses available to Study Abroad and Exchange students can be found in the Course Catalogue.

The grading scale at UEA is different than at UMaine. See the conversion from UEA grades to UMaine grades. Credits transfer as following:

20 UEA credits = 5 UMaine credits

10 UEA credits = 2.5 UMaine credits

Undergraduate programmes at the University of East Anglia are made up of three levels:

Level 1 – first year introductory modules (100- and 200-level courses at UMaine)

Level 2 – second year intermediate modules (300-level courses at UMaine)

Level 3 – final year advanced modules (400-level courses at UMaine)

Academic Calendar:

The Direct Exchange Programme is available for a full academic year or for a single semester. The academic year at UEA is divided into two semesters with modular courses consisting of self-contained units taught and assessed by a combination of coursework and year-end examinations. Visit the Academic Calendar for updated information on semester and orientation dates.

Housing:

UEA guarantees campus accommodation to all UMaine exchange students. Accommodation in all University residences is self-catering (i.e., no meal plan). Each residence contains several fully-furnished, centrally-heated, single-occupancy rooms grouped round a shared kitchen. Kitchens come equipped with a fridge, freezer and oven or microwave; and residents provide their own cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery. Students also provide their own linens, or bedding packs can be purchased from the Accommodation Office.

Health Insurance:

Students attending UEA for more than six months are eligible for free National Health Service (NHS) care, but students with pre-existing medical conditions may wish to obtain private health insurance, as well as students attending for less than six months. The UEA has a Medical Centre on campus.
