Internet2 Board of Trustees Call for Nominations Now Open

The call for nominations is now open for candidates to serve on the Internet2 Board of Trustees. Beginning 14 January through 25 January 2008, the Governance & Nominations Committee (GNC) is seeking individuals to serve on the Internet2 Board of Trustees in the following constituencies: At the same time, Internet2 is also accepting nominations for candidates to occupy two open seats on the GNC. The current roster of GNC representatives can be found online.

- 1 CIO Representative
- 1 Network Researcher Representative
- 1 Discipline Researcher Representative
- 1 Industry Representative
- 1 Financial Representative
Nominations may be submitted by anyone regardless of their Internet2 affiliation. Self-nominations are also welcome. Nominations must be received by Friday, 25 January 2008. The call for participation for the Spring 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting has been extended to 25 January. Internet2 is still accepting proposals for track sessions, poster sessions, and side meetings for our community gathering, scheduled for 21-23 April in Arlington, Virginia. The spring meeting will offer sessions that highlight innovative uses of advanced networking for research and teaching, as well as technical sessions on the development and evolution of high-performance network infrastructures in support of local to global cyberinfrastructure. The call for side meetings and poster sessions is also open. Internet2 is also inviting members to sponsor a reception, meals, and refreshment breaks during the member meeting. Meeting registration will be live starting on 4 February. Internet2 IDEA Awards Deadline Extended to 28 January

The Internet2 IDEA Awards highlight innovation at member campuses and organizations, and recognize leadership in research, education, and application development. Previous winners have applied advanced networking to enable transformational advances in research, teaching and learning by researchers, faculty, and students. New for 2008, the Wave of the Future Award will recognize the innovators who are deploying advanced applications that specifically use a dedicated optical circuit with capacities up to 10 Gbps. The winning application in this category will receive a dedicated, point-to-point optical circuit of up to 10 Gbps on the Internet2 Network infrastructure between two Internet2 Connector sites for a one year period. See the Internet2 IDEA Award website for more information. Winter ESCC/Internet2/APAN Joint Techs Workshop to Highlight Latest in Advanced Network Technology and Applications

The ESnet Site Coordinating Committee (ESCC) and Internet2 Joint Techs Workshop will hold their annual winter session next week in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hosted by the University of Hawaii, the four-day conference brings together leaders in the research and education community to explore and discuss important technology issues and the latest advancements in next-generation networking. This winter, presentations will cover the new high-performance nationwide Internet2 Network, the new ESnet4 Network, future Internet architectures, optical networking, advanced wireless networks, dynamic circuit networking and control plane technologies, IPV6 deployment, network measurement and performance, and network security. The 2008 Hawaii Joint Techs Workshop is a part of the third Techs In Paradise (TIP) event co-sponsored internationally to bring together the North American and Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) community for a week of meetings, workshops, and in-person collaboration. In addition to the APAN Meeting and Joint Techs, TIP2008 will also include meetings of the Internet Educational Equal Access Foundation, the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF), TransPAC2 and the Hawaii Intranet Consortium, as well as an Internet2 Network Performance Workshop and an Internet2 Dynamic Circuit Network Workshop.

Internet2 Congratulates Molly Broad on Appointment as President of the American Council on Education
Internet2 congratulates Molly Broad, a member of the Internet2 Board of Trustees, on her recent appointment as president of the American Council on Education (ACE). In her new role, Broad will lead ACE in its efforts to provide leadership and a unifying voice on key higher education issues and to influence public policy through advocacy, research, and program initiatives. Internet2 works closely with ACE on important technology policy issues facing the higher education community including broadband deployment and network neutrality.Broad also previously served as chair of the Internet2 Board of Trustees and president of the University of North Carolina system. In her new role, she succeeds David Ward, who led ACE since September 2001 and also previously served as chair of the Internet2 Board of Trustees.
Pew Internet Project and Elon University Request Internet2 Community Participation in Survey on the Future of the Internet

The Pew Internet Project and Elon University are conducting an ongoing survey about the future of the Internet, and would like to include the views of the Internet2 community in their research. The current survey follows two previous surveys that measured the expected impact of the Internet over the next decade. The Pew Internet Project will issue a report based on this survey in the spring, which they hope will be useful to policy makers, scholars and those in the information technology industry. Material from this survey also will be added to the Imagining the Internet site. Internet2 community members who choose to participate should use the PIN: 9000.
