Transition to the New Internet2 Network Accelerating
New network deployment team is installing nodes throughout the eastern United States and constructing collocation facilities.
http://www.internet2.edu/network/library/CommunityNetworkUpdate2.pdf

Transition from the Abilene Network to the new Internet2 Network is accelerating, with new network nodes being deployed throughout the eastern United States and construction of collocation facilities now in progress through El Paso and Salt Lake City. In addition to relocating the traditional Internet2 IP service from the Qwest backbone to the new Internet2 Dedicated Wave System on the Level 3 infrastructure, new dedicated and dynamic wave services are also available on the portions of the new network that are complete.

An increasing number of connectors are also evaluating the Internet2 Commercial Peering trial as another way to potentially leverage their Internet2 capacity and decrease their commodity internet usage. More information on the new network and the transition schedule is available at the above URL.

Workshop Series Prepares Scientists and Networking Community for Collider Data
https://indico.fnal.gov/categoryDisplay.py?categId=22

Scientists at your institution have been working for the past decade to bring the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to life. Starting in 2007, this experimental facility will generate petabytes of new data, and individual scientists will typically analyze terabyte data-sets to extract useful information from this archive. In order to help campuses understand the implications for these data requirements, the U.S. LHC community and Internet2 are jointly organizing a series of one-day regional workshops for scientists in the physics community and the campus, regional, and national network professionals that support them. These workshops will provide the opportunity for participants to develop detailed plans for dealing with this new source of science data, will help inform decisions about infrastructure changes, middleware requirements, and services that your research community will need.

The first of these workshops is being co-hosted by Texas A&M University and takes place on 14 February 2007 at College Station, TX.

A Transatlantic Rehearsal: Musicians in Miami Use DVTS to Perform Live for French Composers

On 2 February 2007, the New World Symphony in Miami rehearsed pieces by French composers Mr. Henri Dutilleux and Marc-André Dalbavie, while the composers participated live from IRCAM Paris. This transatlantic rehearsal, a “virtual concert room,” enabled live exchanges between musicians in Miami and the composers in Paris via RENATER-4 in France, GEANT2 in Europe, and Internet2's Network. These advanced reasearch and education networks provided the bandwidth and quality of service to ensure high quality audio and video using the DVTS software maintained by the WIDE Project – a Japanese research consortium and Internet2 international partner.

NOC Changes Name to Reflect New Network Deployment
http://noc.net.internet2.edu/

Internet2 is working with Level 3 Communications, Infinera, Ciena Corporation, Juniper Networks, and the Indiana University Global Research NOC, to upgrade the current Abilene Network. The new Internet2 Network will provide the U.S. research and education community with a new dynamic, innovative, and cost-effective hybrid optical and packet infrastructure. With the Chicago to New York backbone portion of the Internet2 Network already in production and carrying traffic, it has become apparent that a standardized naming convention must be used in reference to the network during this transition period.

On 1 February 2007, the Abilene NOC became the Internet2 NOC. The Internet2 NOC's new email address is noc@net.internet2.edu. The legacy e-mail address, noc@abilene.iu.edu, will remain active and monitored by the Internet2 NOC for a period of 9 months. The Internet2 NOC phone number, (317) 278-6622, will remain the same. NOC e-mail and phone contacts will continue to be supported twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. In all future communication from the Internet2 NOC, the Abilene Network will now be referred to as the Internet2 IP Network.

The Internet2 NOC homepage URL is now noc.net.internet2.edu. The legacy Abilene NOC URL, www.abilene.iu.edu, will redirect you to the new webpage. You can stay up to date on the progress of the deployment of the new Internet2 Network by visiting the following sites:
