MAGPI Connects to the New Internet2 Network
MAGPI's connection extends the reach of Internet2's new nationwide network to its members in the New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania region.
https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i2-news/2007-02/msg00001.html

The MAGPI advanced networking hub at the University of Pennsylvania has connected to the new Internet2 Network, providing the research and education community in the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware region access to the most high-performance nationwide networking capabilities available. In December 2006, just six months after announcing its agreement with Level 3 Communications to deploy its new nationwide network, Internet2 announced that the first segment of the new network had gone live from Chicago to New York. With MAGPI's connection, the Internet2 Network transition in the northeast corridor is complete. The new network, on schedule for full deployment by mid-2007, will support a full range of production IP services as well as new on-demand, dedicated circuits and sub-wavelength services for the most demanding network applications and experimentation.

New Internet2 Membership Category for Regional and Education Networks
New membership category underscores the critical role of state and regional networks in the integrated provision of advanced networking resources to the higher education community and enables these organizations to participate fully in Internet2 governance.
http://www.internet2.edu/membership/

The Internet2 Board of Trustees recently approved a new Regional and Education (R&E) Network membership category based on recommendations from its Governance and Nominations Committee and NPPAC. The new R&E Network membership category is open to any US-based non-profit organization that is sub-state, state or multi-state in scope and that provides network infrastructure and services primarily to the research and education community, including--but not limited to--access to the Internet2 national network infrastructure and capabilities. This membership category recognizes the partnership with these organizations in the provision of advanced networking services and technologies to the university and research community, and will ensure state and regional network organizations have full membership benefits, including participating in Internet2 governance.

Existing Affiliate members who qualify for this new category will be contacted shortly regarding the transition process. Internet2 staff and NPPAC extend their gratitude to members of StateNets and the Quilt for their involvement in and contributions to the development of the category definition.

To inquire about R&E Network Membership, or other Internet2 membership categories, send email to membership@internet2.edu. Information on how to apply for membership in the new category, as well as information on how this category relates to status as an Internet2 Connector, is available at the above URL.

Internet2 Participates in Federal Trade Commission's "Broadband Connectivity Competition Policy" Workshop
FTC Workshop highlighted debate over net neutrality and broadband competition; Internet2, representing higher education IT interests, participated to provide the research and academic community's perspective on the need for an open and free Internet to support continued innovation, research and collaboration.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) hosted a public workshop on "Broadband Connectivity Competition Policy." The workshop brought together experts from business, government, and the technology sector, consumer advocates, and academics to explore competition and consumer protection issues relating to broadband Internet access, including "network neutrality." Internet2's Vice President of External Relations, Gary Bachula, representing higher education IT interests, participated in the workshop on the "What Framework Best Promotes Competition and Consumer Welfare?" panel. Internet2 in partnership with EDUCAUSE and other like minded organizations have been working to protect net neutrality and the openness of the Internet that has become so vital to enabling the research and academic community to fulfill its missions of promoting educational and innovation opportunities for all Americans. DELEARN Connects to Internet2's Next-Generation Nationwide Network
Delaware state education network becomes 38th SEGP; students, faculty, and researchers across the state of Delaware can now access one of the most advanced networks in the world to enable new breakthroughs in K20 teaching and learning.
https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i2-news/2007-02/msg00003.html

Internet2, the University of Delaware, and Delaware's Department of Technology and Information announced in February that Delaware's statewide education network, DELEARN, has become an Internet2 Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP), the 38th state education network to participate in the program. DELEARN brings together Delaware's schools, libraries, colleges and other education and culturally-oriented institutions to share information and technology. The connection to Internet2 will provide Delaware's public school students with more sophisticated technologies like videoconferencing for live language, cultural and other educational interactions with students all over the world. One example of how the Internet2 network is already in use in Delaware is at the Delaware School for the Deaf, where students have access to the expertise of sign-language enabled instructors at other Internet2-connected schools like those in Oklahoma and Georgia.
