Internet2 Affiliate Members Transition to new R&E Membership Category
Current Internet2 Affiliate Members who provide network infrastructure and services to the research and education community are invited to transition to new membership category.
http://www.internet2.edu/membership/categories/index.html

As a first major step in ensuring that state and regional networking organizations have appropriate recognition and involvement in Internet2, including associated membership benefits and representation in Internet2's governance structure, the Internet2 Board of Trustees recently approved a new Regional and Education (R&E) Network membership category. The new R&E Network membership category is open to any US-based non-profit organization that is sub-state, state or multi-state in scope and that provides network infrastructure and services primarily to the research and education community, including access to the Internet2 national network infrastructure and capabilities. Current Internet2 Affiliate Members who provide such services are now being asked to transition to the new R&E Membership category. For any questions on the new category, eligibility, the transition process, or for any additional information, please send email to membership@internet2.edu.

Governance and Nominations Committee Begins Work on Nominations and Elections Process
Internet2’s new Advisory Council structure will be organized according to functional activities, designed to include the perspectives of different stakeholder communities, and more effectively linked both to the policy work of the Board of Trustees and to the operational work of the Internet2 administration.
http://www.internet2.edu/about/governance/govnomcomm.html

One of the key recommendations made by the Internet2 Governance and Nominations Committee (GNC) in their report to the Board of Trustees was to replace the existing Internet2 Advisory Councils with a new council structure that is heterogeneous, defined by operational function, and more tightly connected to the membership, to Internet2 management, and to the Board. The four new councils recommended by the GNC are the: Architecture and Operations Advisory Council; Applications, Middleware, and Services Advisory Council; Research Advisory Council; and External Relations Advisory Council.

The GNC proposed that each of the four councils have fifteen members who serve three-year terms. Twelve council members will be elected by the members of Internet2; three will be appointed by the Board of Directors. Elected members will have backgrounds in research, university administration, industry, and operating state or regional networks. The full descriptions of the four new councils can be found on the GNC Wiki. The GNC met on 2 March to begin their work on the nominations and elections process. Look for more information on the call for nominations in the weeks ahead.

High-Quality Live Video of Latest Bob Ballard Expedition Available via Internet2 Network
Bob Ballard leads new expedition to the Gulf of Mexico and uses advanced telepresence technology and live streaming via IP multicast over the Internet2 network to share his findings with students, teachers, and researchers.
http://www.immersionpresents.org/

This week, renowned ocean explorer Dr. Robert Ballard and a team of scientists explored the undersea landscape of NOAA's Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary (FGBNMS). One of the 13 US national marine sanctuaries, the FGBNMS is located off the Texas/Louisiana coast and was targeted for exploration because of its unique geology and biology. The expedition team employed state-of-the-art "telepresence" technology to enable students, educators, scientists and the general public back on shore to follow the expedition 24/7 in real-time. Ballard and his colleague Dr. Kevin McBride of the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center are also using this same telepresence technology to lead the expedition from a remote science console based at the Mystic Aquarium & Institute for Exploration in Connecticut.

To complement this program, Ballard hosted a series of live broadcasts produced by Immersion Presents, which are part of a larger interdisciplinary science curriculum entitled Secrets of the Gulf. Additional sessions will be held live on 8-9 March at 11 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, 3 pm and 4 pm EST. For more information, to watch the broadcasts, and to follow the expedition online, visit the above URL. The broadcasts can also be viewed at http://www.oceanslive.org/.

Internet2 Announces Transitions for Member and Partner Relations Executive Director Laurie Burns

Laurie Burns, Internet2's Executive Director of Member and Partner Relations (MPR) will be leaving her post with Internet2 this summer as she assumes full-time responsibilities within the Indiana University's president's office when her husband, Michael McRobbie begins his term as the university's 18th president on 1 July 2007. In the coming months, Laurie will be focusing on supporting the implementation of Internet2's new governance structure. She will continue to consult with Internet2 on a limited basis as needed after July 1.

In order to ensure a smooth transition in the leadership of MPR, Cheryl Fremon, executive director with responsibility for the Deployment and Infrastructure Delivery; Network Research, Architecture & Technologies; and Performance Architecture & Technologies groups, has taken over management of MPR, effective immediately. Internet2 has also begun a formal search for new members of the Internet2 executive team. Internet2 has assembled a staff advisory committee to assist the organization in the search as well as an external search advisory committee consisting of Internet2's Council chairs Steve Hall, Larry Landweber, David Lassner, and Jack McCredie; Jim Bruce as facilitator; Jacqueline Brown from University of Washington; Greg Jackson from the University of Chicago; Sally Jackson from the University of Arizona; and Kevin Morooney from the Pennsylvania State University.

Internet2 is grateful for Laurie's service over the past seven years. She has played a key role in establishing and building our Member and Partner Relations department into the capable team it is today. In her first days at Internet2, she helped grow the Internet2 Member Meetings into the comprehensive events that they have become. She has also played a leading role in the evolution of Internet2's governance and membership structure, building the Internet2 community beyond its initial membership base, helping to guide the organization and community through establishment and growth of the K20 and SEGP programs, and most recently working to implement the new Research and Education Network membership category. Laurie has also facilitated much of the work of the Governance and Nominations Committee which she will continue to support during her remaining time with the organization.

Enhancing Research and Education Networking to and within South Asia
http://events.internet2.edu/2007/southasia/

Do you have an experiment, class or project that depends on Internet2-type connectivity to colleagues, facilities or data in a country in South Asia? Participate in this workshop to learn about the current status of R&E networking connectivity in the countries of South Asia and help shape the solution for connectivity between the Internet2 community and South Asia. The workshop on "Enhancing Research and Education Networking to and within South Asia" will be held in conjunction with the Spring 2007 Internet2 Member Meeting and cover the countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The workshop will focus on:
  • providing an overview of research and education networking within and to the region;
  • understanding key user communities and their needs for advanced networking to support regional and international collaborations;
  • understanding the availability of underlying telecommunications infrastructure within and between the countries;
  • learning about major initiatives ongoing or planned to address R&E network infrastructure and user community needs in the region.
The workshop is expected to bring together representatives from:
  • national research and education networking organizations from countries in South Asia
  • major scientific and academic user groups in South Asian countries and the US
  • telecommunications infrastructure providers
  • international organizations such as the World Bank and other regional associations
  • government and other funding agencies from the US and other countries
The outcome of the workshop is expected to provide decision-makers and funders with a better understanding of the available research and education network capabilities and user needs in the region, including the opportunities and challenges to further development, deployment and use; and lead to more coordination of existing and future initiatives within the region. There is a separate registration for workshop. Registration for the workshop can be found on the same registration page as for the Internet2 Spring Member Meeting.

Internet2 and Collaborators to Host Campus Cyberinfrastructure Days
waiting for URL from UC Davis

Cyberinfrastructure (CI) is playing an increasingly important role in enabling campus researchers to collaborate with their colleagues worldwide via high performance networks and computing, software tools, and visualization facilities. TeraGrid, Open Science Grid, Internet2, and EDUCAUSE are working together to try and gain a better understanding of the CI picture, and to clarify functions and roles in the creation of this infrastructure. One activity started by this group is a series of "CI Day" events, which will take place at campuses to assist in their CI planning. These workshops will bring together stakeholders at the campus, regional, and national levels to share information and plan how to provide the appropriate CI functions to support campus researchers. On 5-6 April 2007, UC Davis will host the first CI Day, inviting faculty, researchers, IT professionals, administrators, and CI providers to start a dialogue addressing their local cyberinfrastructure needs.

New Network Connection Agreement Published
http://www.internet2.edu/network/

As discussed at the Fall 2006 Internet2 Member Meeting and the recent Joint Techs meeting in Minneapolis, we have been in the process of creating the Internet2 Network Connection Agreement. This new agreement is modeled after, and consistent with, the existing Abilene connection agreement. Much of the new language in the agreement addresses the transition to the new network, the ability to contract for new services (e.g., backup connection, dynamic services, peering, etc.), and the expansion of the SEGP program to include state agencies. To provide connectors with a smooth transition to the Internet2 Network, the existing Abilene connection fee will continue in effect until its annual renewal date, regardless of the connection types connectors choose for transition to the new network.

As requested by the regional network colleagues attending the Joint Techs meeting, we have provided the language of this contract to all existing Abilene Connectors concurrently. We will contact individual connectors within each region as quickly as possible, working on a region-by-region basis corresponding with the phased deployment of the new network. We look forward to working with all our connectors in the transition to the Internet2 Network.
