http://www.internet2.edu/about/governance/nominations.html
As outlined in a letter from Jeff Lehman, Internet2 Board of Trustees Chair, nominations are now open for the four new Advisory Councils defined by the Governance and Nominations Committee(GNC) in their final report. The nominations are open to any member of Internet2, as defined by the current membership categories, and can be submitted using an online nominations form by anyone regardless of Internet2 affiliation. These new Councils are designed to be heterogeneous, defined by operational function and more tightly connected to the membership, to management, and to the Board. Nominations must be received by 7 May 2007. For more information, including a link to the nomination submission form, please refer to the above URL.

In September 2006, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created a pilot rural health program to assist public and non-profit health care providers to create or connect to state and regional broadband networks and, in turn, to the advanced resources of national research networks like Internet2. The FCC has set 7 May as the deadline for pilot program applications.
Detailed information about the program as well as proposal resources are available on Internet2's program website. For additional information, please contact Mike McGill.

Author Gerda Weissmann Klein Presentation to be Webcast
http://www.merit.edu/events/kleinwebcast/index.php
Holocaust survivor, historian and author Gerda Weissmann Klein will speak at the W.K. Kellogg Auditorium in Battle Creek, MI on 16 April at 11:00 am EDT. Many students have interacted with Mrs. Klein via videoconferencing as part of the "Stand Up, Speak Out, Lend a Hand" program, a 60-day service learning challenge in which students are encouraged to initiate their own projects, and 16 April presentation is the culmination of these activities. While 2000 students will be on hand in Battle Creek to see and hear Mrs. Klein, this group represents only a fraction of all students who wanted to attend. In response to this need, Merit Network, in collaboration with Internet2, Battle Creek Public Schools, Lakeview School District, Calhoun Intermediate School District, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the Klein Foundation are providing a broadcast stream. Mrs. Klein's presentation will be streamed live over the Internet and Internet2 advanced networks by Merit Network and will be available as RealMedia, Windows Media, QuickTime, and MPEG-2 Multicast.

Enhancing Research and Education Networking to and within South Asia
http://events.internet2.edu/2007/southasia/
Are you interested in the status of research and education networking in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka? Do you have researchers or faculty on your campus engaged in collaborations with colleagues in South Asia who could benefit from high-performance network connectivity? Two Planning Meetings--one focused on Healthcare and Medical Research Collaborations between the US and South Asia, and the other on Connectivity issues will take place 25-26 April in conjunction with the Spring 2007 Internet2 Member Meeting at the Crystal Gateway Marriott hotel in Arlington, Virginia. The meetings are being hosted by the Internet2 Special Interest Group on Emerging NRENs. Support and leadership for the meeting on Wednesday focused on medical collaborations is being provided by CTIS, Inc. Support and leadership for the meeting on Thursday focused on connectivity issues is being provided by the NSF International Research Network Connections program through the Indiana University-led TransPAC2 project. RSVP is required to attend either or both of the meetings. Please contact Giselle Trent.
New World Symphony to Netcast Live Full-orchestra Performance
http://www.nws.edu
For the first time in its 19-year history, the New World Symphony (NWS) will netcast a full-orchestra performance live over both the commercial Internet and Internet2 networks, Sunday, 29 April, at 4:30pm EDT. Michael Tilson Thomas, artistic director, will introduce and conduct Stravinsky's Pétrouchka in front of a live audience of 700 at the Lincoln Theatre, NWS's home in Miami Beach, Florida. The performance is expected to run for 37 minutes.Links to the live performance will be available at the NWS website. The netcast, available on RealPlayer and Windows Media for commercial Internet users, will provide a complete view of the conductor and orchestra paired with high-quality audio. Locations connected to the Internet2 network or its international partner networks can access the netcast in multi-cast format at greater bandwidth, providing higher video and audio quality. The NWS website will also contain program notes, a performers' blog, and more information about NWS. Colleagues at Internet2 network-connected sites are invited to submit feedback on the performance at Feedback@nws.edu.

InQue WAYF Testbed to Shut Down in June
https://authdev.it.ohio-state.edu/twiki/bin/view/Shibboleth/InQueueShutDown
The Shibboleth and InQueue support teams announce the closing of the InQueue test federation. InQueue has served the Shibboleth community for several years as a testbed and learning facility, but as the community has grown, InQueue has become increasingly impractical to operate, and has been superseded by other services.Publishing of InQueue metadata and operation of the InQueue WAYF will cease on 1 June. Any browser users in your organizations who are accessing Shibboleth-enabled services and are currently being redirected through the IQ WAYF will suddenly find themselves at an undefined service. Please plan and act accordingly, in order to avoid this disruption to users. For more information about InQueue, its histories, and its issues, see the above URL.

Multi-site Videoconference Links 1500 Students for Virtual Charity Event
http://www.magpi.net/programs/alexslemonade.html
For the first time ever, over 1500 students across the country will be connected using high tech videoconference and networking technology to kick off a national fundraising drive to help fight pediatric cancer. The event is in support of Alex's Lemonade Stand, a national organization that grew out of the Philadelphia front yard lemonade stand started by Alexandra "Alex" Scott, a pediatric cancer patient.Over 19 schools are involved in the event--from coast to coast. After the multi-site videoconference rally, students will work for two weeks in their communities to raise money using their own lemonade stands and will report their fundraising totals on a daily basis via a special website. The charity drive will culminate in a final multi-site videoconference on 26 April with special guest speaker Congressman Joe Sestak who will join via videoconference from Washington D.C.
The Virtual Alex's Lemonade Project has been coordinated by MAGPI and Alex's Lemonade Stand with technical support from Internet2.
Microsoft and REN-ISAC Partner

At the annual EDUCAUSE and Internet2 Security Professionals Conference, Microsoft Corporation and the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC) announced a new alliance that will extend the reach of the Microsoft® Security Cooperation Program (SCP) to include higher education institutions in its mission to enhance security measures worldwide. This new alliance marks the first time Microsoft has worked with higher education entities within the SCP, a worldwide program originally formed for government entities. The SCP provides a structured way for Microsoft to share information efficiently, improving responses to computer security incidents and decreasing the risk of system attacks at member organizations.
REN-ISAC and CSI2 Working Group Leverage Joint Expertise to Advance Network Security Development
At the annual EDUCAUSE and Internet2 Security Professionals Conference, the Computer Security Incidents-Internet2 Working Group (CSI2) and the members of the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center (REN-ISAC) met to develop a set of strategies that will facilitate the development of new methodologies and technologies to better anticipate and resolve network security issues affecting backbone networks, campus networks, and individual computers.Today, CSI2 and REN-ISAC have many complementary and collaborative programs underway. With support from a recent grant awarded by the Office of Justice Programs of the Department of Justice (DOJ) the two groups will be able to better supplement and expand existing network security initiatives. CSI2 and REN-ISAC plan to work together on a number of important development projects including the enhancement of the Research and Educational Networking Operational Information Retrieval (RENOIR) system, the expansion of the Shared Darknet project, as well as the creation of additional open source security tools to assist network operators and IT managers in their day to day operations.
