In October, the advanced networking community will gather for the 22nd time since Internet2 was launched, to share the many exciting developments in advanced technologies for research and education worldwide. Our Fall 2007 Internet2 Member Meeting is hosted by UCSD, giving us the opportunity to showcase some of the advanced networking initiatives of our West Coast partners.

We are pleased to host two exciting general session presenters: Larry Smarr, the Director of Calit2, and Francine Berman, the Director of SDSC and an international leader in the development of cyberinfrastructure. There will also be a number of sessions focused on the new Interne2 Network, along with advanced networking demos held at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). And don't miss this year's Gala Event, which takes place at UCSD's Birch Aquarium, at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Please make your Town and Country Resort room reservations soon, as the only rooms available at the are those in the Member Meeting room block, which expires at 5:00 pm on 20 September. Once those rooms are all reserved, there will be no rooms available at the resort. Detailed hotel and travel information is available on the meeting website.

The Governance and Nominations Committee is pleased to announce that with the completion of the first-ever Internet2 Advisory Council elections and Board of Trustees approval of appointees, all constituency seats are now filled. Internet2 would like to welcome new council members, and acknowledge all those who agreed to stand for election and serve the community.

The new Advisory Councils are:

Representing leaders from academia, research, and industry, Internet2's Advisory Councils provide strategic guidance, assist in setting organizational priorities, and ensure that Internet2 continues to meet the needs of the research and education community which it serves.

The Advisory Council members will participate in an orientation session to be held on Sunday, October 7 preceding the start of the Internet2 Fall Member Meeting. At this session, Council members will be provided with an overview of various Internet2 programs, services and activities, and will have the opportunity to meet as individual councils to begin their work.

Beginning a New Era in Advanced Networking
Progress toward the transition to the new Internet2 Network and decommissioning of the Abilene Network continues.

Completion of the new Internet2 Network and decommissioning of the Abilene Network are on track, as Internet2, our connectors and the NOC staff at Indiana University make the final steps to ensure all of the Internet2 Network participants and peers have been smoothly transitioned to the new network. In addition to the advanced IP networking provided by Abilene, the new Internet2 Network will provide hybrid networking capabilities, including a Dynamic Circuits (DC) Network.

Most recently, the University of South Florida moved off the last Abilene Atlanta router. CENIC completed its move to the new Los Angeles Router, and the NOC moved international PACwave peers to the new network. In Texas, LEARN transitioned the University of Texas-Austin and North Texas GigaPop to a new connection in Houston. Shortly, the team will also finish the migration of PAIX, NGIX-W and Oregon to the Sunnyvale node.

Once these final network transition tasks have been completed, the team will be removing the routers in Sunnyvale, Los Angeles and Houston from the Qwest PoPs. We look forward to celebrating the successful completion of the new network at the Fall Member Meeting in October.

Internet2 would like to again extend our gratitude to the IU NOC, our connectors, members, peers and other network partners who through their hard work and dedication have brought this new and robust network to life for our community. Special thanks are also due to our new partners at Level 3, but also to our long-time partners at Qwest who have put extraordinary effort in supporting the R&E community even as transition from the Abilene Network to the new Internet2 Network reaches these final stages.
