Internet2 to Feature Demonstrations of Leading Edge Capabilities at SC07
http://events.internet2.edu/2007/SC07/
SC07 takes place November 10-16, 2007 in Reno, Nevada. Internet2 returns to the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking, and storage with demonstrations that showcase our leading edge capabilities including the Internet2 Dynamic Circuit Network (DCN), a network which enables the dynamic provisioning of circuits; perfSONAR, a framework for multi-domain network performance monitoring; and Phoebus, a system for partitioning network paths via adaptation points that leverage the best performance characteristics of each network segment. Additionally, Internet2 has engaged with corporate partners, members, and collaborators, including Infinera, Juniper Networks, Level3 Communications, Caltech, ESnet, and Fermilab, in demonstrations featuring breakthroughs in 40 Gigabit per second (Gbps) and GMPLS technologies, further underscoring our community's commitment to innovation and bringing attention to the value of the Internet2 Network as a testbed for network research and development.
Dynamic Circuit Network: Internet2 will demonstrate the interoperability of the Internet2 DCN network with other dynamic circuit network implementations like ESnet's Science Data Network (SDN), GÉANT2's AutoBahn, Nortel's Dynamic Resource Allocation Controller (DRAC) deployment, and the University of Amsterdam's test network. The demonstrations will be enabled via the Inter-Domain Controller (IDC) protocol developed under the auspices of the DICE control plane working group.
The multi-domain network paths created through the DCN interoperability demos will showcase advanced applications including:
Phoebus: In addition to the Phoebus/DCN demo, Phoebus is entered in the SC07 Bandwidth challenge to demonstrate how its capabilities can maximize the performance of a 10 GigE connection between the SC07 show floor and CERN.
- Video transfer between HEAnet, Ireland’s National Education and Research Network, and the Internet2 SC booth
- Large Hadron Collider (LHC) file transfer between University of Nebraska, Lincoln (UNL) and Fermi (and possibly others)
- High Definition streaming video between Nortel's office in Ottawa and the Internet2 SC booth
- Phoebus file transfer capability over 1 GigE between the US and HEAnet, and the US and PIONIER, Poland’s Optical Internet--built by the by the Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center (PSNC)--where intermediate Phoebus adaptation points leverage DCN capabilities to improve performance over long-haul, low-loss backbone networks.
perfSONAR: perfSONAR-PS is a network performance monitoring framework implementing the perfSONAR protocol, capable of delivering end-to-end measurement data for paths traversing numerous networks. Designed as a collection of independent yet federated services, perfSONAR-PS can consume, store and present a wide variety of measurement data.
The SC07 conference will feature perfSONAR-PS in many roles, especially within the DCN demonstration. In addition to monitoring and visualizing network performance from our partners (SCinet, ESnet and GÉANT2), perfSONAR-PS services will be used to locate and describe network topology components and provide crucial information mapping between the DCN and Internet2 IP Network. perfSONAR-PS is able to provide these powerful features, yet remains compact and easy to install no matter the size of the network.
Be sure to come by the Internet2 booth, 2815, to see these demos and to learn more about the new Internet2 Network and services now available.
Internet2 IDEA Awards to Recognize Revolutionary Uses of Advanced Networking
https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i2-news/2007-10/msg00005.html
Internet2 and Level 3 Communications, Inc. have announced a new category for the Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Awards program. The new "Wave of the Future" category was unveiled earlier this month at Internet2's fall member meeting to recognize innovators who are developing and deploying advanced applications that specifically require or make use of a dedicated optical circuit with capacities up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). Open to existing or proposed applications, the Internet2 IDEA awards are designed to showcase projects that apply the latest in advanced networking capabilities to enable transformational progress in research, to enhance teaching and learning, and to potentially increase the impact of next-generation networks around the world.
Fall 2007 Internet2 Member Meeting Highlights
http://events.internet2.edu/2007/fall-mm/
During the week of October 8, the Internet2 community gathered in person at our Fall Member Meeting in San Diego. In addition to offering presentations on a wide variety of advanced networking activities, the meeting provided the opportunity for Internet2 member interactions--enabling attendees to ask questions, share insights, and foster new collaborations. Whether you were unable to attend, or just missed a session of interest, you can view the meeting netcast and presentation archives, available online. Among the meeting's many highlights were the two general sessions. The first featured an overview of the new Internet2 Network infrastructure and service offerings, along with a demo of the high-capacity Dynamic Circuit Network. The session concluded with a presentation by Dr. Larry Smarr, the founding director of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, better known as Calit2.
The second general session continued the cyberinfrastructure theme in the form of a panel discussion "Cyberinfrastructure: The Way Forward." The panel was moderated by Dr. Francine Berman, director of the San Diego Supercomputer Center, an NSF Cyberinfrastructure Center.
Meeting attendees were also treated to an afternoon of tours and demos on the University of California, San Diego campus. The highlights of the afternoon activities included advanced applications demonstrations presented by Internet2 members at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) and tours and demos at the Calit2 facility.
The success of each Internet2 Member Meeting results from the expertise, contributions, and hard work of many individuals and organizations. Internet2 would like to thank those who provided sponsorship and support for our Fall 2007 Member Meeting.
Our community will gather again for the Spring 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting from April 21-23 in Arlington, Virginia. We hope to see you there!
Winter 2008 ESCC/Internet2/APAN Joint Techs Workshop
http://www.hawaii.edu/tip2008/
Session Proposals are now open for the Winter 2008 ESCC/Internet2/APAN Joint Techs Workshop, part of the Techs In Paradise (TIP) program which will be hosted by the University of Hawaii, January 20-25, 2008. If you would like to give a presentation or organize a BoF, Vendor Soup, or side meeting, please fill out the online submission form. The deadline for session proposals is January 4, 2008. If you have questions, please contact the Joint Techs Co-Chairs Russ Hobby or Scott Bradley.
Additionally, Internet2 is looking for members to sponsor the Welcome Reception and lunch breaks during the Workshop. The reception sponsor will have the opportunity to say a few words from the podium. Reception and lunch sponsors will be recognized on the workshop web site, in Internet2 newsletters, and via signage at the event site. If you would like to sponsor the reception or lunch during the workshop, please contact Ellen Vaughan.
