Telecom: Meridian Mail

Having Meridian Mail is like having an answering machine associated with your telephone. Meridian Mail provides the capability to send and receive confidential messages 24 hours a day from anywhere on or off campus. Meridian Mail notifies you when you have a new message by lighting up the red lamp on your Meridian telephone OR you will hear a stutter dial tone when you lift the handset if you have a different type of phone. Below are instructions how to log into your mailbox to retrieve your messages.

  1. Lift handset, press message key OR dial: 1-3001 If you are a faculty/staff member located on the ORONO campus. 1-3000 If you are a faculty/staff member located on the BANGOR campus OR if you are a student.
  2. When you hear Meridian Mail. Mailbox? Enter your five digit phone number followed by the # sign.
  3. When you hear Password. Enter your password, followed by the # sign. If you are using your mailbox for the first time, the password will be your 5 digit phone number. However, you should change your password to something other than your phone number so that others cannot access your mailbox and erase messages or change your greeting, etc. (Command to change your password is 84.)
  4. You will then be informed of how many messages you have waiting. To listen to the first message press 2. You can delete the message by pressing 76. To move to the next message, press 6. To move to the previous message, press 4. To listen to each consecutive message being described, press 2.
  5. To log out of Meridian Mail, press 83.

After following steps 1-3 above, you can also access the following basic Meridian Mail functions by pressing the appropriate codes:

  • 82 Allows you to record a personalized greeting on your mailbox for your callers to hear.
  • 84 Allows you to change your mailbox password. This is extremely important. If the mailbox password and the phone number are the same, anyone who knows your phone number can access your mailbox. Changing your password to something other than your 5-digit phone number is the only way to protect your mailbox from unauthorized access.

To retrieve messages from off-campus, dial 581-3001 if you are a faculty/staff member on the Orono campus OR 581-3000 if you are a faculty/staff member on the Bangor campus or if you are a student living in the residence halls. YOU MUST BE CALLING FROM A TOUCH TONE PHONE WHICH IS SET TO TONE. Then follow steps 2-5 on the previous page.

IMPORTANT: After you have listened to a message, it will only be stored in your mailbox for a specified amount of time.

STUDENTS: Messages are erased after they are stored for 1 day. After a message is 1 day it is erased.

FACULTY/STAFF: Messages are stored for 5 days. After a message is 5 days old it is erased.
