  • NEW server settings for FirstClass
Dear FirstClass User,

In an effort to create a more scalable architecture we will be making a major change in the way that third party clients connect to the FirstClass server.  This change will not affect anyone who uses the FirstClass client to connect, only those
using third party applications such as Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, Windows Live Mail, Eudora, or mobile devices such as Blackberrys and Droids to check their FirstClass email.

We will be changing the name of the server you connect to for all third party clients accessing FirstClass.  If you are using POP3 protocol your new incoming server name will be pop.umit.maine.edu, if you are using IMAP protocol the server name will
be imap.umit.maine.edu.  The outgoing server name will remain the same.  This change will occur on April 21st, 2010 but we strongly suggest that you make the change now to ensure you will be ready for the cutover.

To make this change please see the instructions for your particular client.  In most clients you can search the Help file for keyword “server” to find instructions on how to change this setting.  We have configuration instructions for current
versions of Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, and Windows Live Mail on our website at http://www.umaine.edu/it/software/firstclass/.   If you need assistance, please contact the IT Help Center at 581-2506.
