Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting Program Now Online

The program for the Fall Member Meeting is now online. The program will feature over 70 track sessions that highlight innovative uses of advanced networking for research and teaching, as well as the development and evolution of high-performance network infrastructures in support of local to global cyberinfrastructure. General session presenters at the meeting will include Scott Cowen, President of Tulane University, who will describe the Tulane experience before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina, and Ed Seidel who will present on the importance of cyberinfrastructure for higher ed. Seidel, Director of the LSU Center for Computation and Technology, was selected by the National Science Foundation to direct the Office of Cyberinfrastructure, a position he will start in September. In addition, members of the Strategic Planning Execution Committee will update our community on their ideas for and progress with the strategic plan implementation process, giving our full membership the opportunity for reaction and input.

Please register now to take advantage of the lowest rates, which are in effect through 18 August. The meeting will take place 13-16 October in New Orleans, Louisiana at the Sheraton New Orleans. Please also make your hotel reservations to guarantee a room at the special Internet2 block rate, which extends through 10 September.

Strategic Planning Update

The Strategic Planning Execution Committee (SPEC) has been working to create effective, efficient ways to link implementation of the strategic plan into on-going operation of Internet2. The challenge is to identify a process that blends the leadership of Internet2 staff, existing activities by working and special interest groups, and budget constraints, all at a level appropriate for oversight by Advisory Councils. The SPEC will present a draft of this process at the Fall Member Meeting for review and discussion by the Internet2 member community.

Internet2 to Provide Dedicated 10 Gbps Circuit to GENI Effort

Internet2 is contributing 10 Gbps of dedicated capacity on its nationwide network to the National Science Foundation's GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations) project. GENI is envisioned as a national-scale laboratory for cutting-edge cyberinfrastructure. Internet2 already works with the network research community through efforts such as the Internet2 Observatory, the 100 x 100 Project, Planet Lab, and others.

Summer '08 Joint Techs Workshop Netcast Archive Available

The Summer '08 ESCC/Internet2 Joint Techs was held in Lincoln, Nebraska 20-24 July. If you were unable to attend the meeting in person, the netcast and slide archive is available online.

Internet2 would like to thank corporate members Ciena and Fujitsu for lunch sponsorship, as well as ADVA Optical Networking, Foundry Networks, Juniper Networks, and Level 3 Communications for sponsoring the Welcome Reception and the demo for the IPv6 Challenge.

Internet2 Board Confirms Member Dues and Network Participation Fees for 2009

At its July 2008 meeting, the Internet2 Board of Trustees confirmed the previously planned membership dues and network participation fees for 2009. Beginning 1 January 2009 dues will be $33,600 and $13,125, depending on organizational membership category. Network participation fees will be $26,000. During their analysis and discussion, the Internet2 Board felt it was critical to keep annual increases low in consideration of the existing economic climate while providing a stable foundation for implementing the member-driven priorities outlined in the strategic plan.
