The newly elected Internet2 Board of Trustees met for the first time
on 6 May 2008 in Arlington, Virginia. Members of the new board include
President Jean-Lou Chameau of Caltech, President Jerry Cohon of Carnegie
Mellon University, Jim Bottum of Clemson University, Ray Ford of the
University of Montana, Dave Jent of iLight, Tim Lance of NYSERNet, Mike
Nelson of Georgetown University, Larry Peterson of Princeton University,
and Edward Seidel of Louisiana State University. Chair Jeff Lehman led
the board through a full agenda, which included reviewing the draft
strategic plan that has benefited from significant community input
throughout the process begun in December 2007, including at and around
the Spring 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting. The Strategic Planning Steering
Committee will present the board with the final draft of the strategic
plan for approval at their next meeting in July.

Archived versions of netcasts from the Spring 2008 Internet2 Members
Meeting are now available online. The meeting's general sessions - which
included the Internet2 IDEA Awards presentation, discussion of the
strategic planning process, and presentations on IPv6 and national
broadband policy - are among the netcast archives. Netcast archives from
many other sessions are also available. Many presenters have shared
slides used at sessions. These are linked from the online program.

Developed by the Internet2 community and partners around the
world, Shibboleth
2.0 is the latest major version of the most widely-deployed federated
authentication implementation. The latest release greatly enhances
several key elements of Shibboleth in an effort to ensure
interoperability with other commercial and open-source federated identity
solutions; to improve personalization and security; as well as to ease
installation, management and operation processes. Shibboleth is used
within higher education and research federations such as InCommon, which serves the U.S.
higher education sector and provides a framework for participating
organizations to collaborate and share resources.

- The NTAC has recently created a number of new working groups for Dynamic
Circuit Networking, Network Measurement, Commercial Peering, rural health
networks and other topics and is now inviting interested community
members to participate in these new groups. It is not necessary to be a
member of NTAC in order to participate in the working groups. This is a
chance to involve staff and colleagues in discussions about the technical
components of many of Internet2's new and emerging services. If you are
interested in joining the NTAC or participating in a working group,
please contact the NTAC chair, Paul Schopis at pschopis@oar.net.

- In his keynote presentation
" American Higher Education Is Going Global: Implications for CIOs,
National Networks, and Federal Policymakers" at the EDUCAUSE
Policy 2008 conference, Internet2 Board Chair Jeff Lehman described how
U.S. universities have come to see their universes in global terms, how
joint teaching and research projects dramatically intensify the flow of
data to points halfway around the world, and how advanced networking is
changing perceptions about the kinds of collaborations that are possible.
The cooperation required to support the most ambitious forms and uses of
global cyberinfrastructure spans campus, regional, national, and
international networks, and is challenging the community to develop new
policies and governance structures that respond to the concerns of each
level, including a truly global perspective not yet effectively
captured.
