Fall Member Meeting to Feature Outstanding Program
http://events.internet2.edu/2008/fall-mm/

The program for the Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting will feature many highlights, including 70 track session presentations of innovative uses of advanced networking for research and teaching, as well as the development and evolution of high-performance network infrastructures in support of local to global cyberinfrastructure. In addition, 11 applications demonstrations are planned, which will showcase uses of advanced networking to provide telehealth and telemedicine services, weather forecasting and numerical modeling, and innovative approaches to delivering content and video, among others.

General session presentations will include a live peek behind the scenes at the Large Hadron Collider using advanced iHDTV technology to provide a first hand view of the biggest science device on the planet. Scientists and networking experts at CERN will engage in a live discussion on the importance of the community’s investment in cyberinfrastructure to this work and in future research and discovery, with Q&A opportunities for the audience. Ed Seidel, Director of the NSF Office of Cyberinfrastructure, will present on the "The Importance of Cyberinfrastructure for Higher Education."

General sessions will also feature Scott Cowen, President of Tulane University, who will describe the Tulane experience before, during, and after Hurricane Katrina, and Robert Browning, who will provide a live demonstration the C-SPAN Archives. A live videoconference using dynamic circuit networking and UltraGrid HD technologies will highlight collaboration between Louisiana State University professor Thomas Sterling and students in the Czech Republic, and the Internet2 Strategic Planning Execution Committee will lead a discussion on next steps in the strategic planning process and implementation.

There is still time to register and make plans to join your advanced network colleagues in New Orleans. Please also make your reservations at the Sheraton New Orleans before 5:00pm CDT on 23 September to take advantage of our special meeting room rates.

Strategic Planning and Execution Committee Develops Implementation Framework
http://www.internet2.edu/strategicplanning/

The Strategic Planning and Execution Committee(SPEC) has developed a document that outlines a lightweight framework for implementing the Strategic Plan.  The implementation process is consistent with the interplay between Internet2 staff and governance used throughout the strategic planning process, and incorporates efforts of numerous groups already at work in the related communities.

Please review this document in advance of the Fall 2008 Internet2 Member Meeting, 13-16 October, where there will be a number of forums for discussion. On 14 October, the SPEC will host 3 separate focus groups to allow the community to provide input into the implementation phase of the Internet2 Strategic Plan. Please refer to the meeting program for times and locations. Additionally, executive liaisons will have the opportunity to discuss the Strategic Plan as part of the Community Leaders Forum. Finally, there will be a Strategic Plan implementation presentation at the third General Session, held on 16 October.

LHC Circulates First Beam; Experiments to Begin Next Month
https://mail.internet2.edu/wws/arc/i2-news/2008-09/msg00001.html

September 10 marked the first-ever success in circulating a beam of subatomic particles around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. When LHC experiments begin in October 2008, terabytes of data will flow over networks such as Internet2 to thousands of researchers around the globe, including over 1700 in the United States.

Register for Upcoming Internet2 Workshops and Suggest Future Topics
http://www.internet2.edu/workshops

Internet2 Workshops provide an opportunity to build, debug, and experiment with advanced technologies under the guidance of experts with extensive theoretical and operational experience. Internet2 is offering a number of upcoming workshops on topics such as IPv6, multicast, and network performance. Visit the Workshops page to register.

Additionally, Internet2 is currently evaluating its workshop offerings and would like to hear from members which workshops are the most desirable. We invite you to email your suggestions to workshops@internet2.edu. Please include feedback on Internet2 workshops you have attended in the past and let us know if there are other topics that would be beneficial to you and your organization in the future. Your input is appreciated!
