Early Language Project

What is the Early
Language Project?

A research study conducted by Alan Cobo-Lewis, an associate professor, Psychology Department, University of Maine, and Curtis Meadow, a researcher at Trefoil Corporation, Orono, Maine. We are interested in how young children learn language and in developing a new computerized version of a test of early language.

Information for potential research study participants.

Parents of children ages 8 to 30 months are eligible to participate. You will answer questions, in English, about your child using both a paper and pencil and computerized version of a test of early communicative development. These questions will be about what words your child says or understands, what kinds of babbles she or he produces, and what kinds of activities she or he enjoys. Testing will take place at our office in Corbett Hall at the University of Maine in Orono. Each visit will take about two hours.

Participants will be paid $50 for a single visit and an additional $50 for each subsequent session (if any). You will immediately receive the results of the early language test. These are the benefits for participating. If you have questions about your child's early language development as a result of this process, we will refer you to local and online resources where you can find additional information.
