Richard Judd, Professor of History
History professor Richard Judd has been a member of the UMaine faculty since 1984 and is a scholar of Maine and New England environmental history. He recently was named the Colonel James C. McBride Professor. “We are trying to highlight the importance of natural sciences in history,” says Judd, who has published five books in the field and has developed particular expertise on the Maine forest industry and the roots of conservation in New England, Oregon and the nation. Judd says environmental history provides a critical perspective on land use in a rural, forested state like Maine, as landowners balance conservation with intensifying economic pressures.
Beth Wiemann, Associate Professor of Music
Vermont native and concert clarinetist Beth Wiemann teaches clarinet instruction, orchestration, 20th century musical techniques, composition and graduate-level theory seminars. A recording artist who began her study of composition and clarinet at Oberlin College and received her Ph.D in theory and composition from Princeton University, Wiemann is recognized for her success mixing computer-generated electronic musical compositions with the music of live performers. Her award-winning works have been performed throughout the world. Wiemann uses technology and computer-generated music to create “sound environments.” Her CD, “Why Performers Wear Black,” was released on Albany Records in 2004. Other works by Wiemann appear on the Capstone, Innova and Americus record labels.
