UMaine’s Laboratory for Surface Science & Technology (LASST) plays a major role in educating and training the next generation of scientists and engineers while carrying out interdisciplinary research projects and technology transfer activities in the areas of surfaces and interfaces, thin films, microelectronic devices, sensor technology, and nanotechnology.

Well-established facilities at LASST are available for materials synthesis and processing, analysis and characterization, and device fabrication and testing. Students obtain experience with state-of-the-art instrumentation under the guidance of LASST faculty and professional staff. See LASST video highlight

Discovering Detailed Ocean Data
The study of climate change has fueled the need for more detailed scientific data, and scientists at the University of Maine are doing their part to try and make it easier to collect some of those data.

Technology Transfer

Technology Transfer
Researchers at LASST have excellent working relationships with several Maine companies and national/international partners through collaborative projects and service agreements. In addition, seven high-tech small businesses have been incubated from LASST technology. Read more about them here.
