The NanoTribometer - Metrology
system is a new instrument which was designed and
built at the Laboratory for Surface Science and Technology. The
basic operation of the system is very similar to
an AFM, but the tribometer
uses a Zygo interferometer
system to monitor the lateral movements of the sample
as it is scanned. This interferometer detection
system is connected to the closed loop feedback system
of a Park Scientific
AutoProbe controller. In this way it is
possible to make highly accurate lateral measurements. The
Tribometer also allows for the investigation of a
wide range of lateral forces and applied loads through
its detection system.

The Tribometer was designed
and built by Professor
William Unertl and David Dvorak. It is
currently in the
testing phase.
