Created in 1989, the Landscape Horticulture Society (LHS) serves as an academic group for the UMaine community as a way to expand students' formal education with exposure to some of the many facets in the field of Horticulture though activities such as, guest speaker series, field trips, garden shows and plant sales.
Funded by the student government, annual plant sales, and by membership fees, the Society is run by its student members and elected officers who collectively determine the direction of the Society and plan its activities.
The meetings, which have an informal setting, provide information on various current activities and allows for the opportunity to plan future projects.
Activities
On Maine Day , which is usually held on the last Wednesday in April, a project is organized where Landscape Horticulture students, staff, and faculty work together at the Lyle E. Littlefield Ornamentals Trial and Garden Research Center in the morning and then enjoy a University-wide barbecue together at lunchtime.
The Bangor Garden Show is a yearly project in which the LHS can demonstrate their creativity in garden design. The show also gives students the opportunity to obtain hands-on experience in every aspect of landscaping from the preliminary drawing to the planting of the last shrub. Students work on garden design, collecting the plant material needed, and constructing the final exhibit itself.

Plant Sales take place through out the year where members learn to grow, market and sell numerous flowering plants. Funds from this activity help to support LHC events such as field trips, guest speakers, and a number of social activities.
New England Grows is one of the largest Green Industry trade shows in North America. The LHS sponsors a one-day field trip where students can take advantage of the many lectures; meet with exhibitors and alumni plus job interviews. The Landscape Horticulture Program is a Co-Sponsor of New England Grows.
Field
Trips are organized each year by the
LHS and are opened to the Landscape Horticulture
student body. Field trips range from one-day trips
visiting local public and private gardens, hiking
the scenic areas of Maine to multiple-day field
trips to areas such as Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Longwood
Gardens, Montreal Botanical Gardens to name a
few.
Guest Speaker Series is a joint venture of the Landscape Horticulture Program and the LHS. The goal is to bring speakers from around the US who are leaders in their own right to visit with our guest and students for an evening.
