The garden was established in 1960 to test the cold hardiness and evaluate the ornamental characteristics of plants for Maine landscapes. The permanent collection of more than 1,200 species includes over 140 named crab apple varieties and 110 lilac varieties. Plants have come from as far away as the former Soviet Union and as close as Baxter State Park. The facility provides the avid gardener with the opportunity to observe rare and new ornamental plants and is an excellent spot for picnics, studying and watching wildlife.
