The Appalachian Trail

For over 50 years, the members of the Maine Outing Club have volunteered their time to maintain a section of the Appalachian Trail which extends 2,140+ miles from Springer Mt, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin, Maine. The Maine Outing Club has the honor of being one of the two colleges left in the state of Maine which maintains a section of the Appalachian Trail.

"Our section is about 10 miles long which runs from Baker's Siding (north of Bingham) to Bald Mountain Pond Outlet (west of Blanchard). We also maintain a side-trail to North Peak of Moxie Bald Mt. This section includes the 2,630 ft Moxie Bald Mtn., and sports two lean-tos for hikers' use. The views from the summit include the mountains near Sugarloaf to the southwest, the town of Lake Moxie, Moosehead Lake, and as far as Mt. Katahdin to the northeast.

Each semester the club organizes a trail work trip. During the trip we perform various tasks such as clearing brush, painting trail blazes and building water bars. The MOC provides all of the trail maintenance equipment that is needed and there is always a hearty cookout.
